Now in its 196th year, the 2025 Flower Show: Gardens of Tomorrow, showcases the power of plants, sustainability, and innovation. As the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society‘s (PHS) biggest fundraiser, the Flower Show supports programs that bring trees, gardens, and beauty into our neighborhoods and schools across the city and region, while also cultivating the next generation of horticultural leaders.
“The Flower Show demonstrates how sustainable gardening practices can promote a greener, more resilient future,” said Seth Pearsoll, Creative Director and Vice President for the Philadelphia Flower Show.
According to PHS, The 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show will reduce waste and carbon footprint by:
- Using recycled urban materials, including a repurposed water tower
- Promoting water conservation
- Demonstrating how adaptive reuse can be sustainable
The 2024 Flower Show achieved a remarkable feat, diverting an impressive 84.7% of waste from landfills — a 3.2% increase from the previous year. The goal for this year is to exceed their past waste management.
An excellent example of incorporating more sustainable practices is OLIN’s ‘Don’t Call It Dirt, Don’t Call It Trash,’ in partnership with Philly’s Remark Glass, (Exhibit 58). This exhibit demonstrates how waste materials like glass jars, bottles, and food scraps can be repurposed into recycled glass, sand, biochar, and compost, promoting a renewable approach to sustainable landscaping.

Landscape designer, Susan Cohan’s ‘Field of Vision 25/50’ displays a post-industrial garden using recycled materials, including a repurposed water tower, to emphasize water conservation and the importance of shelter for future gardens. Her exhibit demonstrates how sustainability can create beautiful, environmentally sound spaces for tomorrow.
“By highlighting eco-conscious innovations and the transformative power of plants, the Flower Show demonstrates how sustainable gardening practices can promote a greener, more resilient future. It inspires us to embrace gardening as a simple yet powerful act that drives meaningful change toward a more sustainable world,” said Pearsoll.

Use the color-coded Flower Show Map to locate the educational gardens created by local high schools and universities including Lankenau Environmental Science Magnet High School and Temple University, which focus on environmental stewardship. These student-built exhibits encourage young people to learn how to plan, build, and engage with nature, fostering a deeper interest in gardening. They showcase designs that highlight water conservation, the importance of native plants, and simple ways to create more sustainable landscapes. These exhibits provide hands-on lessons for visitors of all ages about the importance of connecting with the natural world.

Sustainability can also be found in the Marketplace where you’ll find everything for your gardening needs, including plants, tools, natural straw hats, aprons, and gardening sleeves. An example is Ekologic, a Troy, NY company, that recycles used cashmere sweaters into stylish, handmade apparel and accessories. Don’t miss an opportunity to meet the company founder Kathleen Tesnkais who believes, “Expressing your voice through our one-of-a-kind up-cycled products gives strength to a more inclusive compassionate society.”
Community Engagement and Restoration
At the heart of the 2025 Flower Show is a commitment to engaging local communities in the journey toward sustainability. Partnerships with schools, local organizations, and nonprofits will create opportunities for hands-on learning and collaborative projects focused on environmental restoration. Community-led initiatives will be a focal point, highlighting the power of collective action in driving change.
