How to Create a Green Roof or Rooftop Garden at Home
Hiring a Green Roof Professional in Philadelphia
Installing a green roof requires careful planning, especially for existing buildings. “I interviewed several green roof contractors for the projects at 2016 Walnut and 1330 N. 5th St.,” said Deborah Solo, Owner/Broker of Solo Real Estate. “Jeanne Weber, owner of Philadelphia Green Roofs, offered the most reasonable estimate and was highly knowledgeable about the City’s Business Tax Credit and Water Revenue Programs. I was very pleased with her work.”

Weber, who has specialized in green roofs since 2011, cautions that residential buildings often lack the structural support needed for a full green roof. “There is rarely enough support in existing homes for the extra 30 lbs per sq ft,” she explains. “A structural engineer would need to evaluate it, which may require opening up parts of the roof or ceiling to inspect the rafters. Costs typically range from $25 to $30 per sq ft, but can go up to $60–$65 if roof repair is needed.”
DIY Rooftop Container Gardens
If a full green roof isn’t feasible, container gardening offers a beautiful, lightweight, and budget-friendly alternative for rooftops, decks, or terraces.
Basic Steps to Start a Rooftop Container Garden:
- Choose the Right Plants
Consider your roof’s sun exposure (full sun, partial, or shade). Pick plants based on your preference for color, texture, and fragrance. - Select Containers
Opt for durable containers (ceramic, fiberglass, or metal) with drainage holes. Larger containers retain more moisture and reduce watering frequency. - Use the Right Soil
A high-quality, well-draining potting mix is essential. Add perlite or vermiculite to enhance drainage. - Maintain Your Garden
Regular watering, fertilizing, and occasional repotting will keep your plants healthy.
